Dr. Salma Sultana is a Veterinarian, distinguished as the First Female Entrepreneur and Development Worker in the field of livestock in Bangladesh. She is the visionary Founder of the Model Livestock Advancement Foundation and the Model Livestock Institute and Veterinary Hospital Dhaka. Dr. Sultana’s pioneering initiatives include launching Bangladesh’s inaugural outdoor veterinary hospital service and establishing livestock technical training centers. These endeavors aim to ensure comprehensive animal healthcare, combat antimicrobial resistance, foster sustainable employment, and bolster food security and safety at the grassroots level.
In recognition of her groundbreaking contributions, she was named in the Asian Scientist 100 list in the sixth edition of Asian Scientist Magazine, which compiles Asia’s most outstanding researchers (https://www.asianscientist.com/scientist/salma-sultana).
Additionally, she received the prestigious “2020 Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application” from the World Food Prize Foundation for her innovative veterinary outreach model benefiting small-scale farmers in Bangladesh (https://www.worldfoodprize.org/en/nominations/norman_borlaug_field_award/2020_recipient).

Dr. Sultana earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) in Bangladesh in 2010. Following this, she pursued clinical training at Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, India, in 2012. Subsequently, she obtained a Master’s degree in Pharmacology from CVASU in 2014. During her postgraduate studies, Dr. Sultana initiated research on the antimicrobial activity of medicinal plants and their antiparasitic efficacy. Currently, she is pursuing a Ph.D. in the Department of Microbiology, Co-Major Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Iowa State University, USA. Her doctoral research centers on mitigating livestock enteric gas emissions and developing gas sensor technology, contributing to the fields of climate-smart agriculture and antimicrobial resistance solutions.
Dr. Sultana’s literary contributions are equally impressive, comprising 11 professional books and 5 manuals covering diverse aspects of veterinary science. From Basic Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology to Rural Livestock Entrepreneurship, her publications serve as indispensable resources for students and practitioners alike.
