ZOONOSES AND ONE HEALTH APPROACH Capacity Building for Surveillance and Zoonoses Prevention Among School Students
This project started on December 15, 2019, and was completed on March 15, 2020, aimed to assess the extent of knowledge, awareness, attitude, and risks of zoonotic diseases mainly Anthrax, Brucellosis, and Rabies among the 5000 students in 20 Secondary Schools and 32 butchers in Dhaka district, Bangladesh. Schools present an opportunity to reach thousands of children with health messages, it can also provide an entry point to the community.
The project will reduce health hazards by coordinating and promoting appropriate technology, public health education, and community participation. The major contents of the workshop were the introduction of the One Health Approach, an overview of zoonoses, causes, transmission, symptoms, prevention, and control of zoonoses, and the creation of young leaders in every project school.
This was a very impactful project as many children were able to learn about the ecosystem of animals, humans, and the environment. They changed their behavior toward animals and aware of animal-human transmitted diseases and animal welfare. Therefore, more schools need to be selected in the rural areas to fully implement this project.
